Antique Fujian Granite Mortar with Lug Handles
Repurposed for Asian-style gardens, water features & landscape design
This substantial hand-carved granite mortar was salvaged in Fujian Province, China, and is estimated to be 100+ years old (late Qing Dynasty to early Republic period). Unlike the more roughly hewn examples, this piece has a cleaner, more finished form — a rounded, bowl-like body with two integral lug handles on opposite sides and a deep, smoothly worn circular basin.
The granite shows the natural speckled texture and soft weathering of age, with a slightly more refined surface than purely utilitarian farm pieces. The interior of the basin is particularly well-worn from long use, while the exterior retains a solid, sculptural presence.
