The Rankei Style Stone Lantern (also known as Ran Kei or Rankei-gata Ishidōrō) is one of the most elegant and distinctive designs in traditional Japanese garden architecture. Characterized by its graceful arched or curved column (sao), which elegantly cantilevers to support the fire box (hibukuro) in a beautifully balanced, almost floating position, this lantern creates a sense of dynamic poise and harmony. The sweeping curve often evokes the gentle bend of a branch or the flow of water, making it especially suited for placement along pond edges, streams, or waterside settings—where it appears to lean thoughtfully over the reflective surface.
